Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not Walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

Jesus Is Our Light

“I am come a Light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in the darkness” (John 12:46).

Perhaps you have heard the verse “Thy word is a Lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). This verse could just as easily have “word” capitalized. Why? Because Jesus is the Word. Have you ever read the first five verses of John?  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended (over powered) it not.”

When John speaks of the “life” being the “light” of men, we have to remember he is saying that those who accept Jesus have life and light. How do we know this? It’s because we are all under a death sentence in this sinful world. Romans 6:23 puts it this way, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” And Romans 3: 23 states “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” So we being sinful have fallen under the death sentence and the only way out is through Jesus.

This is why I wanted you to meet Him. He will give us life when we choose Him. 1 John 5:11-12 states, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”  Jesus Himself said this, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” I just love the Bible. It shows us everything we need to know, all we have to do is seek Jesus in the word He gave us.

Continuing on in John, he speaks about John the Baptist coming before Jesus to let people know Jesus was coming soon and to get ready. Sounds like what we REALLY need to do today because He is coming soon for us! John 1: 6-9 says this, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (If you read “He Gave us His Son” and the Bible verses provided, you’ll find more about John and who he was to Jesus.) The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through Him might believe. He (John) was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

In this verse, John is speaking about life through the breath of life given to all people. We are made by Him because remember ‘without Him was not any thing made that was made.” He brings us into this world and it does not take long for the influences of Satan to enter into the picture to turn us away from our source of light and life.  Verse 10 and 11 have this to say, “ He was in the world , and the world was made by Him, and the world knew (recognized) Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.”  When I think about the time I was furthest away from Him, how disappointed He must have been that I was not taking His invitation–the gift of salvation. I thank the Lord that He did not give up me. As a matter of fact, I heard a sermon yesterday regarding this verse in Revelation 3:20 which states, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in unto him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” You see He not only stands at the door and knocks but He is talking to you. Not only do we need to open the door of our heart to Him, but we have to open our ears to hear Him. He is the only one with the spiritual food we need to make it through any situation we may encounter. He promises to be with us, too. John 14:18 says, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” and Matthew 28:20 says, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” There are so many wonderful promises when we choose Him. Only through Him we can receive the Light that will disperse the darkness.
